This summer, Barrow Library will host a family-friendly opera event as part of a larger festival aimed at introducing young audiences to music and performance. Running from July 31 to August 9, the festival will feature a range of events that combine music, art, and storytelling in engaging formats.

Mini Magic Flute Performance

The opening event will showcase three performances of Mini Magic Flute, an interactive adaptation of Mozart’s classic opera, The Magic Flute. Designed for children aged four to seven, this 40-minute performance will include a craft activity before the show, allowing children to create something to use during the performance.

Engaging Opera Experience

Starring three opera singers and an accordionist from Opera North, Mini Magic Flute promises to be a lively introduction to the world of opera. A spokesperson for Lake District Music stated, “Nothing will be quite as it appears in Mini Magic Flute, an interactive retelling of Mozart’s magical fairytale and the perfect opportunity for all the family to experience and share the charm of opera.”

Other Festival Highlights

In addition to Mini Magic Flute, the festival features other exciting events. Flautist Meera and harpist Lucy will perform at Windermere Jetty Museum, inspired by John Burningham’s children’s book, Cloudland. Additionally, on August 9, Concerteenies will present The Duck with No Luck at Abbot Hall, following the story of Dizzy the Duck.

Interactive Storytelling

The Duck with No Luck is designed to engage children with songs and actions, creating a relaxed and friendly environment for young audiences. This event promises to be a delightful introduction to music, animation, and storytelling.

Ticket Information

Tickets for Mini Magic Flute, Cloudland, and The Duck with No Luck are priced at £5 for adults and £2 for children under 18. Tickets can be purchased through the Lake District Music website or by contacting the box office directly.

Additional Activities

Families can also participate in DrumNation, a samba drumming workshop suitable for all abilities, at Crow Park in Keswick on August 5. This workshop is free but requires advance booking.

The full festival programme is available at ldsm.org.uk, offering a variety of events for families to enjoy.
