On June 30, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service responded to a significant fire at Mossbay Metals Ltd in Workington. The fire broke out around 11:51 am, prompting a swift response from firefighters across several stations.
Emergency Response
Fire engines from Workington, Whitehaven, Keswick, Cockermouth, and Aspatria were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, a water bowser from Maryport and an aerial ladder platform from Carlisle East were utilised to combat the blaze. Three station managers were also on-site to oversee operations and ensure safety.
Community Cooperation
During the incident, emergency services advised local residents and businesses to close their windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure. The community’s cooperation was instrumental in managing the situation effectively.
Duration and Impact
The firefighting efforts lasted for more than four hours. The response required the closure of several roads, including Bessemer Way roundabout down Solway Road to the junction of Morley Street and Senhouse Street, as well as the industrial estate entrance on Lowther Road.
