Fires at Cumbria Waste Centres Linked to Locals Binning Batteries

Cumbria has reported 11 fire incidents at household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) between January 2021 and February 2026. These fires were primarily linked to improper disposal of waste, particularly lithium batteries and smouldering materials. Notably, three fires occurred within one month in 2025 at recycling sites in the Cumberland area.

All incidents were handled safely by site teams, with no injuries and only minor damage to infrastructure. Prompt evacuation and cooperation with emergency services ensured quick resolution.

Common Causes of Fires at HWRCs

The main causes of the fires include lithium batteries, smouldering waste, and other ignition sources. Lithium-ion batteries, found in many everyday electronic devices, are particularly risky if damaged or disposed of incorrectly. These batteries can ignite or explode, posing dangers to both people and the environment.

Impact of Battery Fires

Battery fires at HWRCs can cause significant disruption and damage. For example, a fire in a compactor at Bousteads HWRC in August required site evacuation and emergency response. Similarly, a compactor fire at Maryport HWRC in September led to the removal of the affected container and temporary closure. Another fire occurred out-of-hours at Frizington HWRC in a wood container, which was managed with fire-watch measures.

Environmental Risks of Improper Battery Disposal

Chloe Tringham, assistant director for climate and waste at Cumberland Council, highlighted the environmental risks of damaged batteries. Beyond fire hazards, batteries contain harmful chemicals that can damage ecosystems if not recycled responsibly. Proper disposal helps protect the environment and conserves valuable resources.

Encouraging Responsible Battery Recycling

Cumberland Council urges residents to dispose of batteries safely by using designated recycling bins. These bins are available at all HWRCs and most supermarkets in the area. Responsible recycling reduces the risk of fires and environmental harm.
