On the evening of April 7th, the Furness Coastguard received reports of a fishing boat in trouble near Barrow. The vessel had broken down and was dragging its anchor, which means it was drifting despite being anchored.

Fortunately, another fishing boat passing by came to the rescue. It towed the distressed vessel back to safety, mooring it north of Jubilee Bridge, also known as Walney Bridge. The Barrow RNLI attended the scene to ensure the safety of all involved.

After confirming that the situation was secure, the RNLI members left to participate in previously scheduled training.

Importance of Calling for Help

The skipper of the fishing boat was uncertain about whether to contact the coastguard. However, he was reassured that seeking assistance was the right decision in this scenario. He also received additional safety advice to prevent future incidents.

Safety Recommendations for Boat Owners

Furness Coastguard emphasises the importance of safety for motor boat owners. They recommend that all engines and safety equipment be serviced before heading out on the water. Regular maintenance is crucial for safe boating.

  • Change fuel filters regularly.
  • Check fuel for contamination.

By following these guidelines, boat owners can help ensure their safety and the safety of others on the water.
