Five-day road closure planned near Barrow
A road near Barrow is due to close for five days while highway work takes place.
Rakesmoor Lane will close from Monday, June 29.
The closure will affect drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. No traffic will be allowed through the closed section while the work is under way.
Westmorland and Furness Council expects the work to take around five days.
Which part of Rakesmoor Lane will close?
The closure will begin around 275 metres south of the junction between Rakesmoor Lane and Bank Lane.
It will then continue for about 670 metres in a north-easterly direction.
Road signs will be placed in the area before the closure begins.
The restriction will only apply while the correct signs are displayed.
People who use the route should allow more time for their journeys. Drivers may also face extra traffic on nearby roads while the closure is in place.
What is the diversion route?
A signed alternative route will be available.
Drivers will be directed along:
- Bank Lane
- The A590 Park Road
- The open section of Rakesmoor Lane
Road users should follow the signs rather than trying to enter the closed section.
The council has not confirmed whether access will be available for homes or businesses within the affected area.
Anyone who needs local access may wish to contact the highways team before travelling.
Pedestrians and cyclists also affected
The road will close to all traffic.
This means pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to pass through the affected section.
People who normally walk or cycle along Rakesmoor Lane will need to find another route until the work has finished.
The council has not given details of a separate walking or cycling diversion.
Why does the order mention 18 months?
The legal road closure order can remain active for up to 18 months.
However, this does not mean Rakesmoor Lane will stay closed for that long.
The council expects the work itself to be completed within five days.
The longer period gives the authority legal cover in case the work is delayed or needs to be rearranged.
The road may reopen sooner if the work is completed ahead of schedule.
Bad weather or other problems could also affect how long the closure lasts.
