Free falls prevention programme
Older residents in Barrow are being invited to join a free 12-week programme designed to improve strength, balance and confidence.
The Otago Falls Prevention Programme will launch at Walney Community Centre on Monday, July 20.
It is being funded by Active Cumbria and delivered by the BEATS team at Barrow Park Leisure Centre.
Only 12 places are available so please act fast.
Who can take part?
The programme is open to people aged 65 and over who are worried about their balance or have experienced a fall in the past.
Participants should be able to move around independently, stand up and sit down without help, and follow instructions safely during each session.
The course is designed to help older people remain active and independent for longer.
Sessions will run every Monday
Classes will take place at Walney Community Centre every Monday at 1.30pm.
Over the 12 weeks, participants will complete a series of structured exercises in a friendly and supportive setting.
The programme aims to improve:
- Balance
- Strength
- Mobility
- Confidence
- Everyday movement
It is completely free to attend.
Local study found major improvements
Research carried out at Barrow Leisure Centre found that the Otago programme led to clear improvements among older adults at risk of falling.
Dr Arun, of Abbey Road Surgery, said a pilot study completed as part of a University of Bath dissertation recorded a 40 per cent improvement across four measures of balance and muscle power during the 12-week period.
He said participants became steadier and more confident in everyday activities.
The results supported Otago as an effective programme for helping people maintain independence and reduce their risk of falling.
Participant says programme helped restore confidence
One person who previously completed the programme said it had made a noticeable difference to their everyday life.
They said: “My knees feel much stronger, and I can now do simple things like put my socks on more easily. I also feel more confident walking on uneven ground, which means I can enjoy walks along the beach again.
“Otago has helped me make real progress and feel more independent.”
