Free Summer Swimming Sessions Launch at Dalton Leisure Centre

Families can enjoy free swimming sessions at Dalton Leisure Centre throughout August as part of a council-funded summer programme.

The Swim4All project will provide free family swims and instructor-led lessons between Monday, August 3 and Friday, August 21.

Activities are being funded by Westmorland and Furness Council and aim to help more local people enjoy the pool, stay active and develop important water-safety skills.

When Are the Free Family Swims?

Free family swimming sessions will take place across three weeks:

  • Monday, August 3 to Friday, August 7
  • Monday, August 10 to Friday, August 14
  • Monday, August 17 to Friday, August 21

Sessions will run from 5pm to 6pm between Monday and Thursday. Friday sessions will be held from 4pm to 5pm.

The swims are suitable for all ages, with space for up to 30 adults and 30 children at each session.

Families do not need to book in advance. Places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so visitors may wish to arrive early during busy periods.

Free Swimming Lessons for Children

The project also includes instructor-led swimming courses for children aged four and above.

Lessons cover different Swim England stages, allowing both beginners and more confident swimmers to take part. Children can learn basic water skills or work on their technique, confidence and stamina.

Beginner sessions for children working through stages one, two and three are scheduled from 9am to 9.30am. Dalton Leisure Centre has announced that all places on these courses have now been taken.

Courses have also been offered for children working through stages four, five and six. These sessions help swimmers improve their strokes and progress through the higher levels of the Learn to Swim programme.

Booking is essential for the structured lessons and spaces are limited. Parents can contact the centre to check whether places remain on any suitable course.

Helping Children Become Safer in Water

Swimming is an enjoyable way for children to stay active during the school holidays. However, learning to swim can also provide skills that may help keep them safe around pools, rivers and lakes.

Instructor-led lessons can teach children how to move through the water, control their breathing and respond if they get into difficulty.

Regular swimming may also improve fitness, coordination and confidence without placing heavy pressure on the joints.

By removing the usual cost, the Swim4All project could help families who may otherwise struggle to pay for lessons or leisure activities during the summer break.
