Furness Abbey to Close for Two Days for Essential Maintenance Work
Furness Abbey will close to visitors for 2 days. This is while essential maintenance work is carried out at the historic Barrow site.
The English Heritage attraction, on Manor Road in Barrow-in-Furness, will be closed on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11. The closure has been announced so maintenance work can be completed safely.
The site is usually open daily from 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.30pm. Visitors planning a trip are being advised to check opening information before travelling.
Why Is Furness Abbey Closing?
The closure is for essential maintenance. While only two days have been set aside, the work means the abbey will not be open to the public on June 10 or June 11.
Temporary closures like this are often needed at historic sites to allow teams to carry out checks, repairs or maintenance without putting visitors at risk.
Furness Abbey is an important heritage site, so work has to be carried out carefully. The ruins are hundreds of years old and need ongoing care to protect them for future visitors.
What Visitors Can See
When open, Furness Abbey gives visitors the chance to walk through the remains of the medieval monastery and learn more about its history.
The site includes an exhibition featuring important finds from the abbey. These include medieval objects connected to the site’s religious past. Including the Furness Crozier and a gemstone ring found in an abbot’s grave.
The abbey is set in a wooded valley, giving it a peaceful setting away from the busier parts of Barrow. It is also known for its red sandstone ruins, which make it one of the most striking heritage sites in the Furness area.
What Visitors Should Know
Anyone planning to visit Furness Abbey should avoid travelling on Wednesday, June 10 or Thursday, June 11, when the site will be closed.
Outside of the closure, the abbey is normally open during the day, and tickets can be booked in advance. English Heritage says visitors who book online before their trip can usually save money compared with paying on the day.
Visitors should also be aware that mobile phone reception at Furness Abbey can be limited, so it is useful to save or screenshot tickets or digital passes before arriving.
The closure is expected to be short, with the site due to reopen after the essential work has been completed.
