Furness Coastguard responding to incident

Injured Person Rescued at Askam Pier

Furness Coastguard was called to Askam Pier following reports of an injured person. But the casualty had already been taken to hospital by the time crews arrived.

The incident began when the injured individual contacted Duddon Inshore Rescue, who then alerted the Coastguard via their Rescue Coordination Centre in Holyhead.

Injured Already at Hospital When Coastguard Arrives

By the time the Furness Coastguard team reached the scene, the casualty had already been transported to Furness General Hospital by the Duddon Inshore Rescue team.

The response highlights the coordination between local rescue services, with Duddon Inshore Rescue acting quickly to assist and escalate the situation.

Specialist Coastguard Medical Training

Furness Coastguard teams are trained in Coastguard Emergency Responder Casualty Care (CERCC), which allows them to provide immediate support in a wide range of medical emergencies.

The training is symptom-based rather than diagnostic and includes:

  • managing hypothermia

  • treating fractures and injuries

  • airway management

  • responding to cardiac arrest

This enables crews to stabilise casualties until further medical assistance is available.

Public Urged to Call Coastguard in Emergencies

Following the incident, the Coastguard has reminded the public to contact emergency services correctly in coastal situations.

Anyone in distress along the coast or on nearby lakes — including Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater and Derwent Water — should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Officials say this ensures the fastest and most appropriate response.
