Barrow-born Georgia Stanway joins Arsenal
Barrow-born England star Georgia Stanway has completed a move to Arsenal following four successful years with Bayern Munich.
The 27-year-old midfielder has joined the Women’s Super League club on a permanent deal after her Bayern contract expired.
Stanway will wear the number four shirt as she returns to English football for the first time since leaving Manchester City in 2022.
Stanway targets more trophies
Stanway described joining Arsenal as an “unbelievable feeling” and said she was proud to become part of a club helping to drive women’s football forward.
She added that she wants to create history and win major honours during her time in north London.
Arsenal finished second in the Women’s Super League last season, four points behind champions Manchester City.
Head coach Renée Slegers said Stanway would strengthen the midfield and bring valuable experience and a winning mentality to the squad.
Arsenal’s director of women’s football, Clare Wheatley, described her as one of the world’s leading midfielders and praised her leadership, character and competitive spirit.
Eight trophies in Germany
Stanway leaves Bayern Munich after winning eight major trophies across four seasons.
She helped Bayern secure four consecutive Frauen-Bundesliga titles, as well as two German Cups and two German Super Cups.
The midfielder made 128 appearances for the club and scored 32 goals during her time in Germany.
Before moving abroad, Stanway spent seven years with Manchester City. She scored 67 goals in 186 appearances and won the Women’s Super League, three FA Cups and three League Cups.
From Barrow to club and international success
Stanway grew up in Barrow and began her football career with Blackburn Rovers before joining Manchester City as a teenager.
She has since become a key player for England, helping the Lionesses win the European Championship in both 2022 and 2025. She was also part of the side that reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.
Stanway has scored 33 goals in 93 senior appearances for her country.
Her move to Arsenal begins the latest chapter in a career that has taken her from playing football in Barrow to winning major honours in England, Germany and on the international stage.
