Westmorland and Furness Council has launched the Brilliant Barrow Community Hub Capital Investment Fund, providing grants of up to £250,000. This initiative is part of the Barrow Town Deal and aims to improve existing facilities in Barrow-in-Furness.
The funding is designed to create or upgrade community wellbeing hubs in the town centre. These hubs will serve as multi-purpose spaces where residents can access various services, activities, and support.
Purpose of the Fund
The main goal of the fund is to enhance community spaces that are currently underutilised. Steve Cole, chair of Brilliant Barrow, emphasised the importance of investing in existing community assets rather than building new structures. This approach aims to maximise the value of the investment for the community.
Eligibility and Funding Details
Grants ranging from £50,000 to £250,000 are available to eligible non-profit organisations. This includes voluntary groups, registered charities, social enterprises, community interest companies, and community amateur sports clubs. Projects must be located within the Old Barrow and Hindpool ward.
Project Requirements
To qualify for funding, projects must demonstrate tangible physical improvements and show evidence of community engagement. They should also provide value for money and ensure long-term sustainability. All projects must be completed by March 31, 2027.
Application Process
The application process starts with an expression of interest, which must be submitted by May 25, 2026. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application, with funding decisions anticipated by the end of June 2026.
Support for Local Community
Councillor Tony Callister, chair of the Furness Locality Board, described the fund as a game-changing opportunity for local groups. He highlighted the potential for these funds to enhance the valuable work being done in the community.
Funding Uses
The grants can cover various costs, including refurbishment, accessibility improvements, construction works, equipment, furnishings, and professional fees. This financial support aims to foster a stronger community spirit in Barrow.
