Greg McCaragher Returns to Kendal Town Ahead of New Season

Kendal Town have confirmed the return of midfielder Greg McCaragher as the club continues to build for the new season.

The 25-year-old, who first appeared for the Mintcakes five years ago, is heading back to Parkside Road after spells with Workington Reds and Gretna.

McCaragher, from Lancaster, brings experience from several clubs and has also spent time playing abroad in Sweden.

His return gives manager Matt Flynn another experienced midfield option as Kendal Town look to push on.

From Academy Football to Sweden

McCaragher began his football career in Burnley FC’s Academy before being offered a two-year scholarship with Fleetwood Town.

At the end of his scholarship, he was given the chance to play in Sweden through the LFE Player Placement programme, with support from the Ian Flannery Football Development Agency.

He joined Ytterhogdals IK for the final three months of the 2019 Swedish season.

The club finished second in Norrland Division 2, the fourth tier of Swedish football, and qualified for the end-of-season play-offs to reach Division 1. They narrowly missed out on promotion.

McCaragher also helped the club win the 2019 DM Cup Final, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory.

Previous Spell at Kendal

After returning to Britain, McCaragher joined Kendal Town and played mainly in midfield.

He then moved on to Workington Reds, where he was recruited by manager Danny Grainger.

During his first season at Workington, he made 21 starts and came on as a substitute 11 times, scoring two goals.

The following season, he was involved in every game, making 33 starts and 13 substitute appearances while scoring three goals.

He later joined Gretna in the Lowland League, where he became a regular.

Early last season, McCaragher returned to Workington but found it difficult to secure a regular starting place. He then left to rejoin Gretna.

Midfielder Excited to Be Back

Speaking after his return to Kendal Town was confirmed, McCaragher said he was happy to be back at the club.

He said: “I’m really happy to be back. I’m excited for the season ahead and to bring the experience I’ve gained since I was last here.

“There are some great people involved at the club, and after speaking to the manager and a few of the lads, I know there’s a great group here. Hopefully, together, we can have a great season and push for promotion.”

His comments suggest Kendal are looking to compete strongly during the coming campaign.

Manager Praises Work Ethic and Quality

Kendal Town manager Matt Flynn said he was pleased to complete the signing.

He said: “It’s great to get Greg over the line. I’ve been an admirer of his for a long time and I’m pleased our paths are crossing now.

“He brings experience and quality to the team. He’s played at a higher level, which will only benefit us.

“As always I sign players who have that work ethic and desire, and Greg ticks all the boxes.

“It’s going to be fun watching him play and I’m sure the fans will take to him quickly.”

Boost for Kendal Town

McCaragher’s return adds another proven player to the Kendal Town squad.

His experience at Workington, Gretna and in Swedish football should help strengthen the midfield, while his previous spell at Kendal means he already knows the club.

With the player speaking openly about a push for promotion, his signing is likely to be seen as a positive move by supporters ahead of the new season.
