The Barrow litter picking festival involved 382 volunteers who collected 323 bags of litter across 20 events. Although some litter picks were postponed or cancelled due to poor weather, most have been rescheduled for this week.

The festival is led by Active Cumbria’s Travel Actively Barrow team in partnership with local councils, businesses, and volunteer groups. It aims to encourage active travel by making the town cleaner and greener.

Community Involvement and Partnerships

The festival brings together multiple organisations including Barrow BID, Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Barrow Town Council, and volunteer groups like The Beautiful Barrow Litter Pickers and The Litter Hitters. This collaboration has helped mobilise hundreds of volunteers across the town.

Purpose and Benefits of the Festival

Siona Hartley from Active Cumbria explained that the event promotes walking, wheeling, and cycling by improving the local environment. The litter picks also foster civic pride and support environmental health. Volunteers receive equipment bundles to continue their efforts beyond the festival.

Impact of Weather on Events

Some litter picking events were postponed or cancelled due to bad weather. However, eight postponed events are planned to take place later this week, ensuring most volunteers still have a chance to participate.

Support from Local Businesses

Several local businesses and organisations have offered free refreshments to volunteers during the litter picks. These include The Derby Inn, The Strawberry Pub, The King Alfred, The Dock Museum, Abbotsvale Community Centre, Walney Community Trust at Spring Mount Hall, and St Marks Church.

Community Spirit and Future Plans

Ms Hartley expressed pride in the community’s efforts and highlighted the positive impact of the festival. She noted that many volunteers enjoy litter picking and are eager to continue beyond the event. The festival has strengthened community bonds and encouraged healthier lifestyles.
