Police investigate after swan shot and killed in Barrow Park

Police have launched an investigation after a swan was reportedly shot and killed in Barrow Park.

The bird is believed to have been targeted with an air rifle during an incident involving waterfowl at the park.

Cumbria Police received a report at around 8.40pm on Sunday evening and officers are now reviewing information about what happened.

Concerns raised over attacks on park birds

The incident has caused anger among residents and wildlife supporters.

Barrow Park is home to swans, ducks, moorhens and other water birds. Concerns have previously been raised about animals at the lake being harmed or disturbed.

Recent reports shared by wildlife groups have referred to both a swan and a moorhen being shot at the park.

Shooting wild birds is an offence unless a specific legal exception applies. Air weapons can also cause prolonged suffering when an animal is injured but not immediately killed.

Police appeal for information

Police are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity around the park to come forward.

Information could include seeing someone carrying an air rifle, hearing shots or noticing people behaving unusually near the lake.

Anyone with relevant details should contact Cumbria Police through its online reporting service or by calling 101.

People should not approach anyone believed to be carrying a weapon. In an emergency, or where there is an immediate danger to the public or wildlife, call 999.
