Paul Griffiths, a 57-year-old convicted paedophile, died at HMP Wymott on April 6 while serving a 20-year sentence. His death has prompted the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) to initiate an investigation. Griffiths was convicted in 2009 for multiple historic offences against two children under the age of 13.

Background of the Case

Griffiths was sentenced at Preston Crown Court after a trial that revealed the horrific nature of his crimes. Alongside co-defendant Paul Martindale, Griffiths was found guilty of serious sexual offences, including rape and gross indecency. The offences occurred in the 1980s and involved disturbing acts of cruelty towards the young victims.

Details of the Conviction

During the trial, the prosecution described how Griffiths and Martindale exploited their victims. The girl, one of the victims, testified that she was subjected to degrading acts, which left her unable to lead a normal life. The boy also provided a harrowing account of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Griffiths.

Sentencing Remarks

Judge Pamela Badley, during sentencing, highlighted the depravity of Griffiths’ actions, stating that the abuse was among the most degrading imaginable. She noted the significant impact on the victims’ lives, emphasising the severity of their suffering.

Response from Authorities

Following the convictions, Chief Inspector Mike Forrester praised the bravery of the victims for coming forward. He expressed hope that their courage would inspire others in similar situations to report abuse. Forrester also warned potential offenders that such actions would not go unpunished.

Inquest into Griffiths’ Death

An inquest into Griffiths’ death was opened and subsequently adjourned at Preston Coroners’ Court. The adjournment was made to allow the PPO investigation to take place. The findings of this investigation will be crucial in understanding the circumstances surrounding his death.
