Barrow-based engineering and marine services firm James Fisher and Sons has reported revenues of £377.2 million for 2025, marking what the company describes as a “turning point” year in its performance.

The results show a 4% increase in revenue, alongside improved profits across all three of its core divisions: defence, energy and maritime transport.

Strong Growth Across Key Sectors

The company’s defence division saw particularly strong growth, with revenues rising 11% to £88.8 million and profit margins more than doubling.

This increase has been linked to higher demand for specialist equipment and services, including submarine and diving systems, at a time when global defence spending continues to rise.

Meanwhile, maritime transport remains the company’s largest income stream, accounting for 39% of total revenue, with profits also increasing year-on-year.

What This Means for Barrow

As one of Barrow’s key employers, James Fisher’s growth is likely to be seen as a positive sign for the local economy.

Higher revenues and improved margins can:

  • support local jobs and apprenticeships

  • strengthen supply chains across Cumbria

  • attract further investment into the area

The company’s ongoing projects, including the construction of four new tankers, also suggest continued long-term activity and demand.

A Boost Tied to Defence Spending

However, much of the company’s recent growth appears to be closely linked to its defence division.

The firm itself notes that rising geopolitical tensions have contributed to increased demand in this area.

While this provides short-term growth, it also highlights a wider issue for Barrow’s economy. Its continued reliance on defence-related industries.

A More Focused Business Strategy

Chief executive Jean Vernet said the company’s recent restructuring has helped create a more “resilient” and focused business.

Efforts to simplify operations and align services around key sectors appear to be delivering results, with all divisions reporting improved performance.

Looking Ahead

James Fisher’s results suggest the company is entering a more stable and profitable phase.

For the local area, that could mean continued employment and investment. But as Barrow continues to develop, the challenge will be ensuring that growth of this scale contributes to a broader and more balanced local economy.
