Kendal man fined after abusive outburst towards Go Local store staff
A Kendal man has been fined after throwing items around a convenience store and demanding free goods from staff.
Liam Christian, 30, of Hawthorne Way, Kendal, appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on July 6.
He admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour which caused distress to staff at the Go Local store.
Police called to store after disturbance
The incident happened on the evening of July 4.
Prosecutor Lee Dacre told the court that police were called after Christian began behaving aggressively inside the shop.
He reportedly demanded that staff give him items for free. When they refused to serve him, his behaviour became more confrontational.
Christian then threw items around the store and swiped products from the shelves.
The disturbance caused alarm to staff and customers who were inside the shop at the time.
Previous convictions raised in court
The court was also told that Christian had previous convictions.
His criminal record was considered by magistrates before they decided what sentence to impose.
No further details about the earlier offences were given during the hearing.
Defence said alcohol contributed to behaviour
Defence solicitor Trystan Roberts said Christian regretted what had happened.
He told the court that Christian had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The defence said his actions were out of character and that he accepted his behaviour towards the store workers had been unacceptable.
Fine, costs and surcharge imposed
Magistrates fined Christian £80.
He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
The total amount he must pay is £197.
The case highlights the impact that aggressive behaviour can have on retail workers, who may be left dealing with threatening situations while carrying out their jobs.
