Paul Atkinson, a 59-year-old manager at Poundland in Kendal, has been sentenced for stealing £2,000 from the store. His theft was uncovered during an internal audit, prompting legal action.
The theft occurred between December 1, 2024, and February 12, 2025. Atkinson admitted to taking between £15 and £50 at a time to cope with mounting debts.
Background of the Offending
Atkinson’s defence lawyer, Trystan Roberts, explained that the manager had no previous convictions and was struggling with personal issues. His marriage had ended, and his relationship with his children was strained.
To deal with his emotional pain, Atkinson began drinking more and accrued over £15,000 in debt. His desperation led him to steal from his employer.
Legal Proceedings
Atkinson pleaded guilty to theft by employee and was sentenced on April 2. The court noted that he made full admissions when arrested and did not attempt to shift blame.
Magistrates considered his lack of sophistication in the crime, acknowledging that he was aware he would eventually be caught.
Sentencing Details
The court imposed a 12-month community order, requiring Atkinson to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and five rehabilitation days. He was also ordered to repay the £2,000 he stole, with deductions to come from his benefits.
No additional court costs or victim surcharges were applied due to his circumstances.
