Askam road to close for six days during utility work
A road near Askam-in-Furness is expected to close for six days while utility work takes place.
Westmorland and Furness Council plans to close a section of the U6096 from Tuesday, July 21.
The closure will begin at the road’s junction with Moor Road. It will then continue north-east for around 1.3 kilometres.
Vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians affected
The temporary order will prohibit all traffic from travelling through the closed section.
This includes:
- Cars and other vehicles
- Cyclists
- Pedestrians
The restriction will only apply while the correct road closure signs are displayed.
The order can legally remain in force for up to 18 months. However, the council expects the work to require a closure of around six days.
No official alternative route available
The council’s notice says there is no suitable alternative route available for all traffic.
This means an official diversion has not been provided that can safely accommodate vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Drivers should not assume that nearby lanes will offer a suitable way around the closure. Some surrounding roads may be narrow, unsuitable for larger vehicles or used to access homes and farms.
People who regularly use the U6096 should allow extra time and plan their journey before travelling. Access arrangements may also vary depending on where the work is taking place along the 1.3km section.
Residents, businesses and landowners who rely on the road may wish to contact the highways team for details about local access during the closure.
Different Moor Road closure also planned
A separate temporary order has also been published for Moor Road in Askam-in-Furness.
That closure affects around 2.3km of Moor Road from its junction with the A595. A signed vehicle diversion is available for that scheme via the unrestricted part of Moor Road, Tarn Flatt, the U6098, Ireleth Brow and the A595. Pedestrian and dismounted cycle access will be maintained during those works.
However, this diversion relates to the separate Moor Road closure. It should not be treated as an official alternative route for the U6096 restriction beginning on July 21.
