The West Coast Main Line, the UK’s busiest mixed-use railway line, has undergone major upgrades between Preston, Lancaster, and Fylde. These improvements are part of a £400 million programme aimed at enhancing reliability for both passengers and freight services.

Details of the Upgrades

Network Rail has replaced overhead power lines and upgraded signalling systems. Paul Danks, a senior programme manager at Network Rail, highlighted the importance of these upgrades for maintaining smooth operations. Over 50 kilometres of overhead power systems were replaced during a planned railway closure.

Impact on Passengers

The works, carried out from April 11 to April 19, caused travel disruptions for many passengers. Network Rail appreciates the understanding of those affected by these necessary improvements in Lancashire and Cumbria.

Future Works and Travel Advice

Further upgrades are scheduled for the early May bank holiday weekend, from May 2 to May 4. This will include the closure of Liverpool Lime Street station on Sunday and Monday mornings for additional signalling work in the Edge Hill area.

Reduced Timetables and Additional Closures

Passengers travelling to and from London Euston should prepare for a reduced timetable due to track improvement works in North West London. More overhead line renewals will also occur between Warrington and Preston during this period.

Staying Informed

Travellers are encouraged to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest updates and timetable changes. Additional works are planned for later in May and June, which are expected to further impact rail journeys.
