2 Year Shop Ban for Cumbrian Man After Repeat Thefts

Workington Magistrates’ Court

Peter Gibbon, 36, of Workington, has been banned from entering shops and supermarkets across parts of Cumbria for 2 years.

The order was issued at Workington Magistrates’ Court. It restricts him from entering a number of retail premises in Workington, Whitehaven and surrounding areas.

The ban has been put in place under a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). To help prevent further incidents and protect local businesses.

What the Ban Covers

The two year order places strict limits on where Gibbon can go.

He is banned from entering multiple named shops and supermarkets across West Cumbria, including both major retailers and smaller local stores. The restrictions are designed to reduce further shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

If he breaches the order, he can be arrested and brought back before the courts, where he could face a custodial sentence.

Why the Order Was Issued

The court heard that Gibbon had been involved in repeated incidents of shoplifting and disruptive behaviour.

Criminal Behaviour Orders are used when there is a pattern of offending. They allow courts to impose clear restrictions to protect businesses and the wider community.

In this case, the order was considered necessary to prevent further offences.

Police Focus on Retail Crime

Cumbria Police continue to work closely with local businesses to tackle retail crime across the region.

Banning orders like this are often used alongside schemes such as Shopwatch, helping retailers and police identify repeat offenders and act quickly.

Officers have confirmed they will monitor the situation and take action if the order is breached.

Ongoing Efforts to Support Local Businesses

The use of CBOs forms part of a wider effort to reduce anti-social behaviour and support local shops.

Police are encouraging businesses and members of the public to report incidents and any breaches of court orders, helping to keep communities safe.
