Ulverston standoff ends safely as man hands himself in to police
A lengthy police standoff in Ulverston has ended safely. After a man left a Dale Street property and handed himself in to officers.
The incident concluded at around 10.35am on Friday, June 19. Continuing through the night from the previous evening.
Cumbria Police said the man walked out of the address and was taken into custody on suspicion of a public order offence.
He had minor injuries to his hands and arms and was assessed at the scene by the ambulance service.
Police also confirmed that a BB gun was found at the property.
Residents who were evacuated from nearby homes were told they would be allowed to return once final safety checks had been completed. These checks included examining concerns surrounding the release of gas from the address.
Armed police called to Dale Street
The incident began shortly after 7.30pm on Thursday, June 18. When officers were called to a property on Dale Street.
Police said a man inside the house had been reported to be in a distressed state.
Armed officers attended because of concerns that a firearm could be involved. A cordon was established around the property while nearby residents were moved from their homes as a precaution.
Negotiators and other emergency service teams remained at the scene throughout the night as officers worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
Police also reported that a substance believed to be noxious was being released intermittently from inside the address.
The nature of the substance has not been confirmed. Safety checks were required before displaced residents could be allowed back into their homes.
Man leaves property after overnight operation
The man remained inside the house throughout the night and into Friday morning.
Shortly before 10.35am, he left the property voluntarily and handed himself over to police.
Officers did not report any serious injuries during the conclusion of the incident.
The man was taken into custody in connection with an alleged public order offence. Cumbria Police has not released his name or confirmed whether any further offences are being investigated.
Although police initially feared that a firearm might be present, the item located at the scene was described as a BB gun.
BB guns fire small pellets or ball bearings and can closely resemble conventional firearms. Armed police may therefore respond when the exact nature of a reported weapon cannot immediately be established.
Residents set to return home
People living close to the Dale Street property were evacuated during the operation to protect them from any possible weapon or hazardous substance.
Police said residents would be able to return after officers and partner agencies had completed their final checks.
Cumbria Police thanked members of the public for their patience during the disruption and also thanked the other agencies that supported the response.
The force has not yet provided further information about the substance reportedly released from the property or confirmed when the police cordon will be fully removed.
The incident is believed to have lasted for around 15 hours from the first police response on Thursday evening until the man left the house on Friday morning.
