Michelle Scrogham MP recently met with Emma Hardy MP, the Under-Secretary of State for Water and Flooding, to discuss the Millom flood risk management scheme. This initiative aims to improve flood defences in Millom and Haverigg, safeguarding homes and businesses from future flooding.

Cumberland Council successfully secured £40 million from the government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Capital Grant in January. This funding is complemented by contributions from United Utilities through the Local Levy.

Funding Details

Mrs Scrogham has been a strong supporter of the flood scheme, collaborating with Bob Kelly, the cabinet member for the environment at Cumberland Council. She expressed her satisfaction with the funding progress during her meeting with the Flooding Minister.

“Working with Cllr Bob Kelly and Cumberland Council, we’ve secured £40 million from the Labour Government for improvements to Millom’s flood defences,” she stated.

Impact on the Community

The flood risk management scheme is expected to protect hundreds of homes and businesses, providing a safer environment for residents. It is also seen as a catalyst for future economic growth and investment in the region.

Mrs Scrogham highlighted the importance of this project for those affected by flooding, calling it “fantastic news” for the community.

Collaboration Efforts

When the funding was announced, Mrs Scrogham praised Cumberland Council for their efforts in preparing the successful bid. Councillor Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, also acknowledged the contributions of United Utilities and the Environment Agency in securing this vital funding.
