A new app, Big Fish Darts, launched by Greg Taylor from Barrow, is helping pubs and clubs remain operational. The app provides a free, simple way to host darts leagues and tournaments. Since its launch in January 2026, 123 venues and over 800 players have signed up.
To participate, pubs need just a phone or tablet and a dartboard. The app has quickly gained popularity, with groups forming across the UK. Including Scotland and Northern Ireland. International interest has even come from Mexico and Belgium.
Impact on Local Venues
The app has significantly impacted local pubs. Some establishments reported they would have closed early without the darts leagues. These leagues attract around 12 to 15 players each night, providing a vital boost to business.
Flexible League Structure
The leagues operate for about seven weeks, featuring knockout tournaments each night. This format allows flexibility for players who may not be able to attend every week, ensuring everyone gets a chance to compete.
Extended Opening Hours
Many pubs have extended their opening hours to accommodate darts leagues. For example, Askam Rugby Club has started opening on Wednesday nights for the public, thanks to the influx of darts players. This change has transformed the midweek dynamics for many clubs.
Future Plans for the App
Greg Taylor plans to expand the app’s offerings. Five new one-day tournaments have been introduced, including some aimed at children on Sunday afternoons. Additionally, Taylor hopes to incorporate a charity function in partnership with organisations like Macmillan and Andy’s Man Club.
Community and Mental Health Benefits
The app has fostered a sense of community among players. Taylor emphasises the importance of social interaction for mental health, especially post-COVID. Players enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, focusing on fun rather than competition.
