New University Campus Opens in Barrow-in-Furness

Barrow has officially become a university town. Following recent opening of a new campus for the University of Cumbria. The multi-million-pound development marks a major step forward for education and skills in the area.

The campus is located on Buccleuch Dock Road on Barrow Island, close to the port and the Submarine Academy. It forms part of the wider Brilliant Barrow Town Deal. A regeneration programme supported by government funding aimed at improving the town’s economy and opportunities for local people.

For the first time, residents in Barrow will be able to study for full university degrees in their own town rather than travelling elsewhere.

A New Opportunity for Local Students

Barrow has historically had low participation in higher education. The new campus aims to change that by making university courses easier to access for people living in the Furness area.

Students will be able to study a range of subjects linked to local job opportunities. Early courses are expected to include areas such as:

  • Mechanical engineering

  • Computer science and digital technology

  • Adult nursing

  • Supply chain and logistics

These courses have been designed with input from major local employers and healthcare organisations so that graduates develop skills that are in demand locally.

Designed for Modern Learning

The campus itself has been built with modern teaching and learning in mind. The two story building includes flexible teaching rooms, specialist workshops and social spaces for students.

The design also reflects Barrow’s maritime heritage, with architecture inspired by the shape of submarines.

Sustainability has also been considered in the design. Features such as solar panels, natural lighting and an air-source heat pump help reduce energy use and make the building more environmentally friendly.

Supporting Barrow’s Future Economy

The new campus is expected to play an important role in supporting the region’s workforce.

Barrow is home to major engineering and defence industries and there is growing demand for skilled workers in areas. Such as advanced manufacturing and healthcare. By training students locally, the campus aims to help businesses find skilled employees while also giving residents more career opportunities without leaving the area.

The development has been delivered through a partnership between the University of Cumbria, local government, industry partners such as BAE Systems, and education providers including Furness College.

Part of a Wider Regeneration Plan

The university campus is one of several projects planned under the Brilliant Barrow regeneration programme.

The initiative secured £25 million in government funding and aims to improve education, housing, community facilities and economic growth across the town.

The Barrow Learning Quarter, which includes the new campus, is expected to benefit thousands of learners over the next two decades by creating new pathways into higher education and skilled careers.

A New Chapter for the Town

The opening of the campus represents a significant moment for Barrow-in-Furness.

For decades, many young people in the area have had to move away to attend university. Now, students have the option to study closer to home while still gaining degree-level qualifications.

As the first cohorts of students begin their studies, the new campus could help shape the future of education, industry and opportunity in Barrow for years to come.
