A beautiful stained glass window has been installed at St Andrew’s Parish Church in Penrith, just in time for Easter Sunday. This window commemorates the 300th anniversary of the church’s nave and chancel, completed in 1723. It was unveiled on April 5 by Canon David Sargent, the Team Rector of Penrith.
The window was designed by Debbie Copley from D C Stained Glass Studio in Kendal and funded by Colin Dawson, a local resident and member of the congregation. Canon Sargent remarked, “He is arisen,” to which the congregation joyfully responded, “Alleluia.” The window’s theme is ‘Christ in the heart of Penrith.’
Design and Features
The stained glass window depicts Jesus as the Good Shepherd, guiding his flock towards St Andrew’s Church. It incorporates references to Andrew the disciple with the words “follow me.” The design also showcases significant local landmarks, including the Giant’s Grave, the Giant’s Thumb, the church’s decorative gates, Penrith clock tower, and the Beacon.
Symbolism and Heritage
At the base of the window, a wheat field represents the region’s agricultural heritage. The window features the inscription “Christ in the heart of Penrith,” along with the initials of the donor and the artist’s mark. Additionally, the design includes the town and diocesan seals, the tercentenary dates, and a depiction of the full peal of eight bells at the top.
Craftsmanship and Techniques
Created using traditional stained glass techniques, the window was made with handmade glass, glass painting, and leadwork. Copley explained the thought process behind the design, considering how light would interact with the glass and how to effectively convey the story through her artwork.
Construction Process
The window stands nearly three metres tall and just over one metre wide, constructed in four sections that fit together vertically. Some glass was sourced from Hartley Woods in Sunderland, a glass blower that ceased operations in 1997. Copley shared insights into the design evolution, noting that each project is unique and requires careful consideration.
Installation Experience
The installation was conducted with assistance from Cumbria Stained Glass. Copley described the moment the final panel was placed as “very magical.” The careful removal of the old clear glass window and the meticulous installation of the new artwork marked a significant milestone for the church and its community.
