Plans Revealed for Two New Zebra Crossings in Ulverston
Plans have been put forward for two new zebra crossings on Springfield Road in Ulverston.
Westmorland and Furness Council is asking for people’s views on the proposals. The crossings are being considered after requests from ward councillors, Ulverston Town Council, local schools and the wider community.
The road serves Ulverston Victoria High School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Sandside Lodge School. All three schools are close to each other, making the route busy with pupils, parents, staff and other road users.
Why the Crossings Are Being Proposed
The plans follow an independent engineering safety study.
That study identified a lack of safe crossing points along Springfield Road. The council is now looking at whether two zebra crossings would help improve safety for pedestrians.
This could be especially important during school drop-off and pick-up times, when more children and families are moving through the area.
Where the Crossings Would Go
The proposed scheme includes two zebra crossings.
One would be placed near St Mary’s Catholic Primary School.
The second would be placed just north of the junction with Springfield Park Road.
These locations have been chosen to improve access across Springfield Road and make the route safer for people walking near the schools.
Parking Changes May Be Needed
Some changes to parking and waiting restrictions would be needed near the proposed crossing points.
This is common with zebra crossing schemes, as drivers need clear visibility of people waiting to cross.
Keeping the areas around crossings clear can also make it easier for drivers to see pedestrians, especially children.
Consultation Now Open
A statutory consultation on the plans is now open.
Residents, parents, schools, businesses and other road users can share their views before the deadline on Friday, May 29.
People can respond online through the Westmorland and Furness Council website. They can also respond by email or post.
Written responses should be marked for the attention of the Traffic Management Team and include the reference SL-TR-2023-005.
