This year, Westmorland and Furness will not participate in local elections, unlike many areas across England, Wales, and Scotland. The council operates on an all-out election system, meaning all councillors are elected every four years. The last elections were held in 2022, and the next will occur in May 2027.
Understanding the Electoral System
Different councils have various electoral systems. Some elect a third of their councillors each year, while others choose half every two years. Westmorland and Furness, however, conducts all-out elections, where all 65 councillors are elected at once.
Previous Elections
The current councillors were elected in 2022 for a five-year term. Initially, they served as part of a shadow authority during the first year. Now, they will serve a full four-year term before the next elections.
Upcoming Elections
While there are no elections this year, significant elections are scheduled for next year. In May 2027, all council seats will be contested, and hundreds of candidates are expected to compete for control of the authority.
Other Local Elections
Next year will also see elections for the new Cumbria Combined Authority. This body aims to manage devolved funding and collaborate on regional strategies. Additionally, elections for parish and town councils across the area will take place, some of which were previously scheduled for this year.
By-Election This Year
The only election occurring this year is a by-election for the Westmorland and Furness and Barrow Town Council. This follows the departure of Councillor Niyall Phillips, who left to pursue a career in Australia. The by-election is set for June 4.
