Sellafield Ships Nuclear Waste to Germany
Sellafield has confirmed the shipment of nuclear waste back to Germany. The flasks seen at Barrow Docks Rail Terminal contain residue from reprocessed radioactive waste. This waste originated from spent fuel used by German utilities to generate electricity.
A spokesperson for Sellafield stated that these returns are crucial for the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) strategy. The aim is to repatriate high-level waste and fulfil international contracts while adhering to UK Government policy.
Details of the Shipment
On June 9, seven flasks were prepared for transport from Sellafield to the Brokdorf interim storage facility in Germany. This shipment is expected to be the last of its kind from the UK to Germany. Previous shipments included six flasks sent to Biblis in 2020 and seven flasks to Isar in 2025.
Concerns from Activist Groups
Despite the logistical efforts, groups like Radiation Free Lakeland have raised concerns about the safety of transporting nuclear waste. They argue that the movement of hazardous materials through populated areas poses significant risks. Protests have been planned in Germany during previous shipments, highlighting public opposition.
Long-term Waste Management Solutions
Both the UK and Germany currently lack permanent solutions for managing radioactive waste. In Cumbria, two coastal areas are being considered for a geological disposal facility (GDF) that would store the UK’s most hazardous waste deep underground. This facility would provide a long-term solution to the nuclear waste issue.
Geological Studies and Community Involvement
Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) has submitted a report suggesting that the geology off the coast of Mid Copeland and South Copeland may be suitable for a GDF. The report indicates that any coal layers in the area are likely to be found at depths beyond economic extraction limits.
Community groups, such as Lakes Against Nuclear Dump (LAND), have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the GDF on local resources. Activists have attended community meetings to voice their opposition and raise awareness about the geological considerations involved.
