A new bench has been installed at Thacka Beck Field in Penrith, serving as a tribute to the Baton of Hope Tour 2025 and highlighting the importance of suicide prevention. This initiative was requested by Terri Hope, a Baton of Hope holder, and approved by the Penrith Town Council’s Communities Committee. The bench is designed to leave a lasting legacy after the tour visits the town in September 2025.
The bench is particularly meaningful to Terri Hope as it commemorates her brother, Gavin Hope. She expressed gratitude to the council for their support in creating a lasting tribute. Terri shared, “I hope it gives people a place to sit, take a breath, and perhaps start a conversation, and helps our community continue to raise awareness that there is hope, and that the world is a better place with you in it.”
Significance of the Baton of Hope
The Baton of Hope is the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative, organising a national baton tour every two years. Its aim is to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and connect individuals affected by suicide. Cumbria will host its own leg of the tour for the first time in 2025, with Terri carrying the baton for part of it.
Design and Message of the Bench
The bench is inscribed with heartfelt messages: “A Moment for You. Take a breath. Sit. Be kind to yourself – this bench is here for you. Dedicated in loving memory of Gavin Hope and The Baton of Hope Tour 2025. Raising awareness and hope around suicide prevention.” This design encourages individuals to pause, reflect, or engage in conversation, fostering connection and kindness.
Statistics on Suicide
According to the Baton of Hope charity, over 700,000 people die by suicide globally each year. In the UK, approximately 19 people die by suicide every day. These statistics underline the urgent need for awareness and support in communities.
Community Support and Resources
Councillor Barbara Jayson, chair of the Communities Committee, highlighted the bench as a lasting tribute to Penrith’s involvement in the Baton of Hope Tour 2025. She hopes it will provide comfort and connection for many in the future. The bench serves as a small yet significant reminder that hope, kindness, and conversation are vital.
