Plans to Convert Former Barrow Betting Shop into House

Plans have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council to convert the former Chas Kendall bookmakers at 66 Warwick Street in Barrow into a two-bedroom detached house. The building is currently in poor condition and was previously used as a betting shop.

The proposal includes raising the building by 400mm to create two storeys, with living spaces on the ground floor and bedrooms upstairs.

Current Condition of the Building

The former betting shop is described as being in a poor state. It features a mix of red facing brick and breeze block on the exterior, both needing repair. The roof, made from natural slate, is also in poor condition and is planned to be replaced.

Conversion Plans

The developers intend to convert the mostly open-plan structure into a home with a living room and kitchen on the ground floor. Upstairs will have two bedrooms and a bathroom. To provide private outdoor space, the rear section of the building will be demolished.

Exterior Changes

Plans include applying a new pebble-dash finish to the exterior walls. New PVC guttering, spouts, and bargeboards will be installed to improve the building’s appearance and functionality.

Background on Chas Kendall

Chas Kendall was a Barrow-based chain of bookmakers with 30 branches, including 10 in Barrow. It was acquired by Coral in 2011. Recently, the council approved a separate plan to convert another vacant Coral betting shop in Barrow into retail space with flats above.
