Large Fire at Barrow Business Leads to Road Closures

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a business on Rawlinson Street in Barrow, with two road closures introduced while the emergency response continues.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident on the afternoon of Saturday, August 1. Several fire appliances were sent to the scene, alongside officers from Cumbria Police.

The fire is understood to have broken out at a sunbed shop on Rawlinson Street. Footage from the scene showed firefighters breaking windows at the premises as they worked to reach the blaze and release heat and smoke from the building.

Roads Closed During Emergency Response

Police have closed Rawlinson Street while firefighters continue their work. A separate closure has also been introduced at the nearby Michaelson Bridge.

The restrictions are helping to keep members of the public away from the scene and provide clear access for fire engines and other emergency vehicles.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area, use an alternative route and allow more time for journeys through Barrow. It is not yet known how long the closures will remain in place.

Firefighters Continue to Tackle Blaze

Crews were still tackling the fire at the time of the latest update. The incident has required a joint response from the fire service and police, with officers managing the closures and helping to keep the surrounding area safe.

Firefighters have been working from outside the premises and gaining access through its windows. Crews may need to remain at the scene after the main blaze has been extinguished to dampen down the building and check for hidden hotspots.

There has not yet been an official update confirming whether anyone was inside the premises when the fire started. No information about injuries has been released at the time of writing.

What Caused the Fire?

The cause of the blaze remains unknown. A fire investigation may begin once the building has been made safe and emergency crews are able to examine the affected area.

There is currently no indication that the fire is being treated as suspicious. Until further details are released, the cause should be considered unconfirmed.

People are being asked not to approach the scene or cross any cordons. Anyone nearby who is affected by smoke should keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.

Further information is expected as the emergency response continues.

This is an ongoing incident. Details and road closures may change at short notice. See our latest post on what we know about the fire.
