Man Rescued After Becoming Stuck Between Walney and Barrow

A man became stuck between Walney and Barrow on Thursday, April 23rd. Prompting a response from Furness Coastguard and Cumbria Police.

The incident happened in the coastal channel area between Walney Island and Barrow, where mud, water and changing tides can make conditions dangerous.

Cumbria Police were dealing with the man at the scene, while Furness Coastguard Rescue Team was called to provide safety cover. The Coastguard attended because there was a risk that the man, officers or others involved could get into difficulty in mud or water.

The man has not been publicly named. No further personal details, including his age or where he is from, have been released.

The incident was later brought under control and the Coastguard team was stood down.

Man Became Stuck in Coastal Area

The main concern was that the man had become stuck in a hazardous coastal location between Walney and Barrow.

This area can be dangerous because of soft mud, tidal water and channels that can change quickly. Ground that looks safe can become difficult to walk on, and people can become trapped before they realise the risk.

Once someone is stuck in mud, it can be hard to get free without help. Moving too much can make the situation worse, and a rising tide can quickly increase the danger.

Police and Coastguard Responded

Cumbria Police were involved in dealing with the incident, while Furness Coastguard attended to support the operation.

The Coastguard’s role was to provide specialist safety cover because of the coastal setting. Its teams are trained to deal with incidents involving mud, tides, water and people in difficulty near the shore.

This meant they were available to help if the man, police officers or anyone else at the scene became trapped or entered the water.

Man Not Publicly Identified

The man involved has not been named, and limited details have been released about why police were dealing with him.

What is known is that he became stuck in the coastal area between Walney and Barrow and that the Coastguard was called because of the risk from mud and water.

No injuries have been confirmed in the information released.

Advice for Coastal Incidents

The incident is a reminder of the risks around the Furness coastline.

Anyone who sees a person stuck in mud, cut off by the tide or in difficulty near the coast should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

People should not try to walk out onto mud or tidal ground to rescue someone themselves. Without the right equipment, more people can become stuck and the situation can become more dangerous.
