Police Road Checks Carried Out Across Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston

Police carried out road checks across several Furness communities as part of Operation Colossus, with drivers stopped in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston.

Officers from the Furness Neighbourhood Policing Team were out in Ulverston, Dalton, Ormsgill, Hindpool, Barrow Island and Roose. The work formed part of a wider effort to improve road safety and tackle anti-social driving in the area.

Police said that in just over an hour, officers stopped and checked multiple vehicles. The operation led to one arrest for drug driving, cannabis being seized from a vehicle search, and one ticket being issued.

Where Police Were Carrying Out Checks

The patrols and checks covered a number of local areas, including:

  • Ulverston
  • Dalton
  • Ormsgill
  • Hindpool
  • Barrow Island
  • Roose

These locations were monitored as part of Operation Colossus, which has been used by police to respond to concerns about unsafe and anti-social driving.

The checks were not limited to one road or one town. Instead, officers moved across different parts of Furness to speak to drivers, inspect vehicles and take action where offences were identified.

What Happened During the Checks

During the operation, police stopped a number of vehicles and carried out checks on drivers and vehicles.

The key outcomes were:

  • Multiple vehicles stopped and checked
  • One person arrested on suspicion of drug driving
  • Cannabis seized during a vehicle search
  • One ticket issued

Police have not provided full details of the ticket offence in the available update. However, previous Operation Colossus activity in the Barrow area has focused on issues such as speeding, seatbelt offences, vehicle safety, insurance and drink or drug driving. In September 2025, police stopped more than 100 vehicles in Barrow and issued 14 traffic reports for offences including excessive speed and not wearing a seatbelt.

Why Operation Colossus Is Taking Place

Operation Colossus is aimed at improving road safety and dealing with anti-social driving. Police have said road safety remains a regular concern for local communities.

The latest checks show officers are continuing to use roadside stops to identify offences quickly. Drug driving is a particular concern because it puts other road users, pedestrians and passengers at risk.

Vehicle searches also allow police to deal with wider offences when they find suspected illegal substances or other items during checks.

Police Continue Road Safety Work Across Furness

The latest activity in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston follows earlier Operation Colossus work in the area.

Police previously carried out checkpoint stops in Barrow, including on the A590 at Park Road and Ironworks Road, with further checks in Dalton-in-Furness, Ormsgill, Roose, Walney and Barrow town centre. That operation led to more than 100 vehicles being stopped and two arrests for drug driving.

The latest checks suggest police will continue to monitor busy roads and local communities where residents have raised concerns about unsafe driving.

Officers are also likely to keep targeting offences that can cause serious harm, including drug driving, drink driving, speeding, poor vehicle condition and driving without proper documents.
