The Post Office has reported a record number of cash transactions in Cumbria, with nearly 40 million withdrawals and deposits in the first quarter of 2026. This marks an increase of 900,000 compared to the same period in 2025. The rise indicates the growing importance of cash services for local communities.
Importance of Cash Services
Maggie Roberts, the postmaster at Storth Post Office, highlighted that cash and banking services constitute about 75% of her business. Many residents depend on the Post Office for their cash needs, allowing them to manage their finances closer to home.
Year-on-Year Increases
Personal cash withdrawals rose by 6% year-on-year, while personal deposits saw a 10% increase. The average cash withdrawal reached £139, a 7% rise from the previous year. This trend suggests that households are using cash more deliberately to manage their budgets amidst rising living costs.
Impact of Seasonal Spending
March was particularly strong for cash transactions, likely due to increased spending for Easter and school holidays. Families are preparing for travel and other expenses, which has driven up the demand for cash as a budgeting tool.
Business Transactions
Business cash withdrawals also increased by 3%, with deposits up by 2% compared to the first quarter of 2025. While the value of transactions grew, the volume remained steady, indicating that businesses continue to rely on cash for their daily operations.
Community Significance
Roberts noted that around 60% of the village’s population are retirees who prefer not to travel far for banking services. Local businesses and community venues also use the Post Office for depositing takings, underscoring its importance within the village.
Post Office’s Role
Ben Hunter Woollard, Head of Banking at the Post Office, stated that these figures demonstrate the vital role Post Office branches play in providing secure access to cash services. This is especially crucial for households and smaller businesses managing their finances in challenging economic times.
