Hundreds of homes were left without electricity across parts of Cumbria after power cuts hit Barrow, Aspatria and Maryport.

The outages affected a large number of properties, with reports suggesting around 900 homes were impacted at one stage. Engineers were called out to investigate and restore power as quickly as possible.

Areas Impacted

The power cuts were reported across multiple locations in West Cumbria, including:

  • Barrow-in-Furness
  • Aspatria
  • Maryport

The outages appear to have been spread across different parts of the network, rather than a single isolated incident, which increased the number of households affected.

What Caused the Power Cuts?

Electricity North West confirmed that the outages were caused by a fault on the network.

While full details have not been confirmed. Faults like this are often linked to damaged equipment, weather-related issues or problems within the local distribution system.

Power companies use estimated restoration times based on previous incidents, but these can change as engineers assess the situation on the ground.

Response and Restoration Efforts

Engineers were deployed to affected areas to locate the fault and restore power.

At the height of the incident, hundreds of properties were without electricity. But restoration work was ongoing throughout the day, with expectations that supply would be returned as repairs progressed.

Electricity North West operates a 24/7 response service and prioritises restoring power as quickly and safely as possible during outages.

What Happens Next

Power supplies are expected to be fully restored once engineers complete repairs to the affected network.

Residents can continue to monitor updates or report issues by contacting their electricity provider.

The incident highlights how quickly faults on the network can affect large areas, particularly when multiple towns are connected through the same infrastructure.
