Power Cuts Affect Homes Across Penrith and Eden

Homes and businesses across Penrith and the wider Eden area were left without electricity on the morning of Monday, July 20, following several separate power cuts.

SP Electricity North West reported faults affecting a number of postcode areas, with engineers sent out to investigate and restore supplies. Different parts of Penrith and surrounding Eden communities were affected, although the number of properties without power and expected restoration times varied between each incident.

Residents were advised to check the electricity network operator’s live outage service or call 105 for the latest information while repair work continued.

Several Separate Faults Reported

The outages were understood to involve more than one fault rather than a single power cut affecting the whole area.

This meant some customers may have had their electricity restored sooner than others. It also meant estimated restoration times could change as engineers assessed the cause and extent of each incident.

SP Electricity North West’s outage information shows the approximate area affected, when the fault was first reported and when supplies are expected to return.

Engineers Sent to Restore Electricity

SP Electricity North West is responsible for the local electricity distribution network across Cumbria.

When an unexpected outage happens, engineers may be able to restore some properties by rerouting electricity through another part of the network. Other customers may remain without power until damaged cables, overhead lines or electrical equipment have been repaired.

The exact causes of the Penrith and Eden outages had not been confirmed in the initial reports.

Residents Asked to Check Their Postcodes

People experiencing a power cut can enter their postcode on the SP Electricity North West website to see whether the fault has already been reported.

The information may include:

  • The approximate number of affected properties
  • When the outage began
  • The area covered by the fault
  • The estimated restoration time
  • Updates from engineers working at the scene

Customers can also call 105 free of charge to report an outage or request further information.

What to Do During a Power Cut

Residents should switch off electrical appliances that could pose a risk when the power returns. Leaving one light switched on can make it easier to see when the supply has been restored.

Fridges and freezers should be kept closed where possible to prevent food from warming up.

People who depend on powered medical equipment should follow their emergency arrangements and contact their healthcare provider or the network operator if they need additional support.

Anyone who sees fallen cables or damaged electrical equipment should stay well clear and call 105. Emergency services should be contacted on 999 where there is an immediate danger.

The main issue with the earlier version was that it delayed the date, operator and affected location. This revised opening brings those facts into the first three paragraphs.
