Fell Street Public Toilets Reopen Following Major Refurbishment

Public toilets on Fell Street in Barrow have reopened following a full refurbishment of the facilities.

The work has improved the male, female and accessible toilets, with Westmorland and Furness Council saying the building now offers a brighter, safer and more welcoming environment.

The upgraded facilities are once again fully open for residents and visitors using Barrow town centre.

What Improvements Have Been Made?

Several parts of the Fell Street toilet block have been replaced or upgraded as part of the project.

The refurbishment included:

  • new windows and doors
  • upgraded toilet cubicles
  • improvements to the electrical system
  • full internal redecoration
  • work to improve the accessible facilities

The improvements were funded through Westmorland and Furness Council’s capital programme. However, the council’s announcement did not confirm the total amount spent on the project.

Extra Town Centre Toilets to Remain Available

While work was taking place on Fell Street, toilets inside Barrow Town Hall were opened for public use.

The council has now decided to continue this arrangement even though the Fell Street facilities have reopened.

This means members of the public will still be able to use the Town Hall toilets during the building’s normal opening hours. The decision will provide another option for people visiting the town centre.

Fell Street is one of several public toilet locations maintained by the council in the Barrow area. Other facilities are listed at Barrow Library, Earnse Bay, Roa Island, Ireleth Cemetery, The Forum and Tudor Square in Dalton.

Part of Wider Barrow Improvements

Westmorland and Furness Council said the work forms part of its wider efforts to improve town-centre facilities and support Barrow’s regeneration.

A council spokesperson said: “We are pleased to see the completion of the refurbishment of the Fell Street toilets, which provides a much-improved facility for everyone using Barrow town centre.

“Investing in high-quality, accessible public amenities is an important part of our ambition to make Barrow a great place to live, work and visit.”

They added that the upgraded facilities should help people feel more comfortable when spending time in the town.

Public toilets may appear to be a relatively small part of Barrow’s wider regeneration plans. However, clean and accessible facilities are particularly important for older residents, disabled people, families with young children and anyone spending longer periods in the town centre.

The reopening also restores a useful facility while Barrow prepares for much larger changes around its shopping, market and entertainment areas.

The Fell Street toilets are located in Barrow town centre under the LA14 1DD postcode.
