The Holker Group has proposed a housing development on 18.2 hectares of agricultural land east of Rakesmoor Lane in Barrow. This plan aims to support the growing workforce at the BAE shipyard. Currently, the proposal is under public consultation.
The land was designated for residential use in the 2019 Barrow Borough Local Plan. However, many locals have raised concerns regarding the impact of this development on existing infrastructure and green spaces.
Community Concerns
Locals have taken to social media to express their worries. A significant issue is the strain on local roads. One resident, Nigel H, highlighted that the addition of 370 houses could lead to over 400 extra cars on Rakesmoor Lane. Which is only a single lane road.
Infrastructure Issues
Concerns about local infrastructure are also common. Tracy G pointed out the need for more shops, schools and healthcare facilities. Alison J echoed this, mentioning the current challenges at the local hospital. Including bed closures and staff shortages.
Affordable Housing Debate
Many people are advocating for affordable housing. Laine F emphasised that homes should be built for local people. Not just those employed at BAE. Cathy D also stressed the importance of supporting the younger generation with affordable options.
Use of Green Spaces
Some community members are frustrated about the use of greenfield land. Brian B expressed his upset. Stating that there are other potential sites in Barrow that could be developed without sacrificing green spaces.
Employer Responsibility
There are calls for major employers like BAE to utilise their own land for worker accommodation. Babs G suggested that BAE should build housing for their contractors, allowing local residents to rent available properties instead of HMOs.
Public Consultation
A public consultation has been initiated, allowing residents to voice their concerns. Many are eager to see how the developers will address the issues raised by the community.
