Planning Applications Submitted for 6 Bed HMO in Barrow

A retrospective planning application has been submitted for the conversion of a former Barrow hair and beauty salon into a 6 bedroom house in multiple occupation.

The application relates to 160 Rawlinson Street, which was previously home to Jules Hair and Beauty.

Plans have been lodged with Westmorland and Furness Council seeking approval for the change of use of the building to a six bedroom HMO.

The application was submitted on May 12. With the consultation period running from June 10 to July 1.

Former Salon Closed After Nearly 20 Years

The Rawlinson Street building was formerly used by Jules Hair and Beauty.

The business had operated from the site for almost two decades before announcing in August 2024 that it would be closing its doors.

The building was later put up for sale with an asking price of £150,000.

Why the Application Is Retrospective

The application is retrospective, meaning work has already taken place before the current planning approval has been granted.

Mrs Masih said they were advised to apply for retrospective permission because the original building had a mixed use.

Retrospective planning applications are not unusual. They allow councils to consider work that has already been carried out and decide whether it should be approved, refused, or changed.

In this case, Westmorland and Furness Council will consider whether the use of the building as a six-bedroom HMO is acceptable.

Consultation Now Open

The consultation period for the Rawlinson Street proposal is open until July 1.

During this period, residents and other interested parties can submit comments to Westmorland and Furness Council.

The council will then consider the application before making a decision.

If approved, the building’s use as a six-bedroom HMO would be formally accepted by the council.

If refused, the applicant may be required to make changes or could appeal the decision.
