Two Barrow Streets Close as Abbey Road Improvement Works Continue

Two streets in Barrow have closed to allow improvement work on Abbey Road to continue safely.

Sections of Park Drive and Cheltenham Street are expected to remain closed until Friday, September 4.

The closures began on Monday, August 3, and apply to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers travelling through the area are being advised to allow extra time and follow the signed diversion.

Which Parts of the Streets Are Closed?

The restrictions affect two short sections close to their junctions with Abbey Road:

  • Cheltenham Street: From its junction with Abbey Road, extending north-west for around 50 metres
  • Park Drive: From its junction with Abbey Road, extending south-east for around 50 metres

The closures are being used to manage traffic while highway improvement work takes place on Abbey Road.

Current roadworks information lists both closures as major works managed by Westmorland and Furness Council. They are scheduled to remain in place until approximately 5pm on September 4.

What Is the Diversion Route?

A diversion has been provided through:

  • Settle Street
  • Ainslie Street
  • Abbey Road
  • Greengate Street
  • Rawlinson Street
  • The unrestricted sections of Cheltenham Street and Park Drive

Road users should follow temporary signs because the exact arrangements may change as work moves forward.

Access through the closed sections is also restricted for people walking or cycling. Those travelling through the area may therefore need to use the same surrounding roads to avoid the work zone.

Why Are the Closures Needed?

The temporary restrictions are intended to help traffic flow safely while improvement work continues along Abbey Road.

Abbey Road is a busy route connecting the town centre with residential areas, Barrow Park and routes towards Furness General Hospital. Closing the short sections of Park Drive and Cheltenham Street should provide workers with more space while reducing the amount of traffic entering the main work area.

The work forms part of wider highway improvements along Abbey Road. These have included changes designed to improve journeys for people walking, cycling and travelling by road.

Drivers Advised to Plan Ahead

The closures could lead to additional traffic on nearby residential streets, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

Drivers who normally join Abbey Road from Park Drive or Cheltenham Street should plan an alternative route before travelling. People heading towards Barrow town centre, the hospital or nearby schools may also wish to leave additional time for their journey.

The scheduled completion date may change if work is delayed by poor weather or other unexpected problems.

Anyone with questions about the restrictions can contact the Cumbria Highways hotline on 0300 373 3300, quoting reference TTROW/17986.
