Multiple Barrow Roads to Close for Nine Weeks of Utility Works

A series of temporary road closures will be introduced in Barrow later this month to allow utility works to be carried out.

The restrictions are due to come into force from Thursday, July 30, with work planned across Duddon Drive, Kennet Road, Derwent Bank, Darent Avenue and Severn Road.

The project will be completed in five phases and is expected to require road restrictions for around nine weeks in total. However, Westmorland and Furness Council has warned that the phases may not be completed in numerical order.

Which roads will be affected?

The first phase will affect part of Duddon Drive between Eamont Close and Darent Avenue.

Around 80 metres of Duddon Drive will close, along with a short section of Derwent Bank extending approximately 30 metres from its junction with Duddon Drive.

Diversions will use open sections of Duddon Drive and Darent Avenue, as well as Derwent Bank, West Shore Road and Mill Lane where required.

Duddon Drive and Darent Avenue closures

A later phase will close around 30 metres of Darent Avenue from its junction with Duddon Drive.

A separate 110-metre section of Duddon Drive, running west from Eamont Close, will also be affected.

Drivers will be diverted using open sections of Duddon Drive, Mill Lane, West Shore Road and Derwent Bank.

Kennet Road included in third and fifth phases

During the third phase, approximately 60 metres of Duddon Drive will close from its junction with Derwent Bank.

Around 25 metres of Kennet Road will also close north of its junction with Duddon Drive.

The diversion route will run through Duddon Drive, Darent Avenue, Severn Road and Derwent Bank.

Kennet Road will be affected again during the fifth phase, when a longer 115-metre section north-west of Duddon Drive is due to close. Drivers will be redirected through Duddon Drive and Darent Avenue.

Severn Road closure also planned

Around 115 metres of Severn Road will close from its junction with Derwent Bank during the fourth phase.

The diversion will use Derwent Bank, Duddon Drive, Darent Avenue and the section of Severn Road that remains open.

Pedestrian access will remain open

The closures will only apply when temporary traffic signs are displayed.

Pedestrian access and access for cyclists who dismount will be maintained throughout the work.

The legal order can remain in force for up to 18 months, although the council expects the restrictions to be needed for around nine weeks in total.
