Barrow bowling club marks 100 years with special competition
A Barrow bowling club has celebrated a century of sport, friendship and community life with a special competition.
Salthouse Bowling Club marked its 100th anniversary by welcoming players to the green for a centenary event. The celebration recognised the club’s long history and the generations of local bowlers who have supported it since it opened in 1926.
A century of bowling in Barrow
Based at Raglan Street, Salthouse Bowling Club has remained an active part of Barrow’s sporting community for 100 years. Historic references also show bowling taking place at the club’s Broadway green during the 1960s.
The centenary competition gave members and visiting players the chance to celebrate the milestone on the green.
Events such as this also highlight the social side of crown green bowling. Local clubs provide a place where people can compete, meet others and remain active throughout the season.
Club remains active in local leagues
Salthouse continues to compete in the Furness and District Bowling League. League records for the 2026 season list Salthouse, Salthouse A and Salthouse B across the area’s divisions, showing the club remains well represented after a century of play.
The club is also due to host an over-60s pairs competition in July, forming part of a busy programme of bowling events across Furness.
Its centenary comes as bowling clubs throughout the area prepare their greens and encourage more people to join the sport. The Furness and District Bowling League has invited new players to register with local clubs for the 2026 season.
Reaching 100 years is a major achievement for any community organisation. For Salthouse Bowling Club, the anniversary celebrates both its past and its continuing place within Barrow’s sporting life.
