New Sculptures on Carlisle Southern Link Road

steel sculptures by artist Ellie Barden at Durdar and Brisco roundabouts

Cumberland Council has reached a notable milestone in the development of the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) with the installation of two striking steel sculptures. Created by local artist Ellie Barden of Grace Forge, these artworks are positioned at the new Durdar and Brisco roundabouts, signalling the project’s progress and adding a distinctive identity to the route.

The sculptures reflect the council’s commitment to leaving a positive legacy for the area, drawing on community feedback and lessons from previous infrastructure projects. They celebrate Cumbria’s rich rural heritage and serve as landmarks that welcome residents and visitors alike.

Community-Inspired Artworks

Following community engagement in 2024, the council selected two sculptures made from durable, low-maintenance weathered steel. Each weighs approximately four tonnes, designed to endure the elements while honouring the region’s agricultural roots.

The Mare and Foal – Durdar Roundabout

Located near Carlisle Racecourse, this sculpture pays tribute to the city’s equestrian history. Carlisle is renowned for the Carlisle Bell, the world’s oldest sporting trophy, first contested in 1599. The Mare and Foal sculpture not only celebrates this heritage but also symbolises growth and regeneration as a gateway to the future St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.

The Limousin Bull – Brisco Roundabout

Situated at the historic site of the Cumberland Show, this sculpture honours Cumbria’s rural community. Inspired in part by “Graiggoch Rambo,” a Limousin bull that set a world record in May 2022 with a sale price of £189,000 at Carlisle auction mart, the bull represents strength, resilience, and quality in the local agricultural sector.

Official Remarks and Next Steps

Cllr Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places at Cumberland Council, emphasised the significance of these installations. She highlighted how the sculptures celebrate local heritage, showcase artistic talent, and mark a key moment as the CSLR nears completion.

The installation of the sculptures is a key step forward, with the remaining sections of the Carlisle Southern Link Road expected to open following a full Road Safety Review planned for April.
