Seven Arrests Were Made Following Police Raids Across Cumbria

On Friday, 27 March, police conducted a series of drug raids across Cumbria, leading to seven arrests. The operation targeted locations in Appleby, Kendal, Penrith, and Barrow. It was funded by Police, Fire, and Crime Commissioner (PFCC) David Allen as part of a wider drugs day of action.

The raids resulted in the seizure of over £35,000 in cash and substantial quantities of drugs.Including more than 200 grams of cocaine and over 300 grams of cannabis.

One individual has been charged, while others were either cautioned or released under investigation.

Operation Ashington and Funding

The operation, named Operation Ashington, was financed using funds recovered from previous drug enforcement activities.

PFCC David Allen emphasised that the public had identified drug dealing as a major concern, second only to antisocial behaviour. He stated that tackling drug dealers is crucial to protecting communities from harm.

Details of the Raids and Arrests

Five warrants and an additional search under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 were executed across multiple towns.

At an Appleby address, two men were arrested: a 25-year-old on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possession of ketamine. And a 33-year-old on suspicion of possession of cannabis. Both were cautioned, with the younger man released under investigation for the conspiracy charge.

Community Impact and Police Response

Detective Inspector Dave Howard explained the operation aimed to disrupt drug supply and related criminality in Westmorland and Furness. The police also sought to engage with drug users and offer support referrals. Community feedback has been positive, with residents appreciating the police action.

Further Charges and Court Proceedings

In Barrow, 20-year-old Bailey Dutton was charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis, as well as possession of criminal property.

He appeared in Barrow Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to Preston Crown Court for a later hearing. Other individuals arrested were either cautioned or released under investigation.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Crime

PFCC David Allen highlighted that enforcement is just one part of the strategy against drugs. Education programmes in schools and community engagement initiatives like OneClick complement enforcement actions. The overall approach aims for zero tolerance towards drug dealers in Cumbria.
