South Cumbrian Café Applies for Alcohol Licence

A café in South Cumbria has applied for a licence to sell alcohol, a move that could allow it to expand its offering to customers.

The application has been submitted under the Licensing Act 2003, which governs the sale of alcohol in England and Wales. If approved, the licence would allow the business to sell alcoholic drinks alongside its existing food and café services.

Licence Application Submitted

The licence application relates to Trenchers café in Bowness-on-Windermere, formerly known as the Boatman’s Café and Gift Shop.

The application proposes allowing the sale of alcohol between:

  • 10am and midnight Monday to Saturday

  • 12pm to 11:30pm on Sundays

The proposal also includes a request to provide late-night refreshments during the final hour of opening on certain days.

Public Consultation Period

As with all premises licence applications, there is a consultation period during which members of the public and responsible authorities can raise concerns or objections.

Anyone wishing to comment on the application must contact Westmorland and Furness Council’s licensing team before the consultation deadline.

Council officials will then consider the application before deciding whether to grant the licence and what conditions may apply.

What It Could Mean for the Café

If the licence is approved, the café would be able to offer alcoholic drinks such as wine, beer or similar beverages to customers visiting the venue.

Many cafés apply for alcohol licences to expand their business model, particularly in tourist areas where visitors may expect evening dining or drinks.

For businesses in popular locations such as Bowness-on-Windermere, offering alcohol can allow venues to operate more like a café-bar or restaurant during evening hours.

Next Steps

The council will review any comments submitted during the consultation period before making a final decision.

If approved, the licence would allow the café to begin selling alcohol in accordance with the permitted hours and any conditions attached to the licence.
