Stranded pensioners rescued by Cumbrian Survivor UK winner
Four pensioners were rescued after becoming stranded in a car surrounded by floodwater in Cumbria.
The incident happened on Tuesday, March 24, on Main Road in Seaton near Workington. The vehicle became stuck as water levels quickly rose, leaving those inside unable to move to safety.
Quick thinking rescue
Matthew Haywood, who won Survivor UK in 2023, was nearby when he spotted the car in difficulty. Without hesitation, he entered the floodwater to help.
He was joined by his brother Harrison and other local residents, who worked together to pull the vehicle to safety before the situation worsened.
Speaking after the incident, Haywood said he felt he had no choice but to act when he saw people trapped in the rising water. He described how quickly conditions were getting worse and how important it was to respond straight away.
Community praised for response
All four occupants were safely rescued thanks to the combined efforts of those at the scene. The rescue has since been praised as an example of strong community spirit, with locals stepping in to help when it mattered most.
A local business, Walkmill Motors, has also offered free servicing to those involved in recognition of their actions.
Local hero recognised
Haywood, who gained national attention after winning Survivor UK, has built a strong following since his appearance on the show. However, this real-life rescue has drawn praise closer to home, highlighting the impact of quick thinking and teamwork in emergency situations.
The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly flooding conditions can change and the importance of acting fast to keep people safe.
