Swarthmoor Road to Close for 10 Days During Utility Works
A road through Swarthmoor is set to close for approximately ten days while utility work is carried out.
The closure will begin on Monday, August 17, and affect a 100-metre section of the C5036 near its junction with the U5124.
Drivers will be directed around the affected section using the A590 and Seg Lane.
When Will the Road Close?
The temporary closure is expected to begin on August 17 and remain in place for around ten days.
This means the work could continue until approximately August 27. However, the road may reopen earlier if the work is completed ahead of schedule.
The restriction will only apply when the correct road signs and barriers are displayed.
Which Part of the Road Will Be Affected?
The closure covers the C5036 from its junction with the U5124, extending south-east for approximately 100 metres.
Westmorland and Furness Council has introduced the restriction to allow utility work to be completed safely. Closing the short section will give workers space to use equipment without vehicles passing through the site.
Access arrangements for properties close to the work may depend on where crews are operating. Residents and businesses directly affected should follow signs or instructions provided on site.
What Is the Alternative Route?
The official diversion will take motorists along:
- The unrestricted section of the C5036
- The A590
- Seg Lane
Drivers approaching the closure should follow the temporary diversion signs rather than relying solely on a sat-nav, which may not immediately recognise the restriction.
The diversion is likely to make some journeys longer, particularly for people travelling locally between Swarthmoor and nearby villages.
Drivers Warned to Allow More Time
Motorists should allow additional time and expect more traffic on the A590 and Seg Lane during the closure.
The work is taking place during the school summer holidays, which may reduce some commuter and school traffic. However, the A590 is also a major route used by residents, businesses and visitors travelling between Barrow and Ulverston.
Drivers should take extra care on smaller roads along or close to the diversion. People should not move barriers or attempt to pass closure signs, even if workers are not immediately visible.
Emergency access will be maintained where required.
Other Roadworks Planned Nearby
Several temporary closures have been announced across the wider Furness area during August.
Greystone Lane at Gleaston is also expected to close from August 17 for approximately three days. A separate closure near Broughton-in-Furness is due to begin on August 19.
Anyone planning journeys across the area may wish to check for overlapping roadworks before setting off.
Current and planned closures can be checked through the Westmorland and Furness Council roadworks map.
