3 Drivers Arrested in Cumbria During Operation Spotlight

On April 1, 2026 Cumbria Police conducted Operation Spotlight. Focusing on the ‘Fatal Four’ driving offences. These include speeding, driving under the influence, not wearing a seatbelt, and driver distraction. In the first hours of the operation, three drivers were arrested.

First Arrest: Drink-Driving

The first arrest occurred on the M6 at Hackthorpe. Officers stopped a driver who was found to be over twice the legal limit for alcohol. The driver, Carl Walsh, 47, from Weston-super-Mare, has been charged with drink driving. He is set to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Second Arrest: Cannabis Use

A second driver, aged 50, was stopped by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and tested positive for cannabis. He has been released under investigation while further tests and enquiries are conducted.

Third Arrest: Insecure Load

The third incident involved a works van near Burton. Police stopped the vehicle due to concerns about insecure materials being transported. The 46 year old driver also tested positive for cannabis and has been released under investigation.

Public Safety Reminder

Cumbria Police have urged the public to plan ahead if they intend to drink during the Bank Holiday weekend. They emphasised the importance of making safe choices to protect lives on the road.
