Three Month Closure Planned for Abbey Road by Dane Avenue
A busy section of Abbey Road in Barrow is set to close for highway improvement works.
The closure will affect Abbey Road between Rating Lane and Dane Avenue. The closure order is due to come into operation on June 1st.
Westmorland and Furness Council has announced the planned road closure to allow highway improvements to take place. The legal order allows the closure to remain in place for up to 18 months, but the road is expected to reopen after around three months.
Where Will Be Affected?
The affected section is on Abbey Road, between:
- Rating Lane
- Dane Avenue
This is a well-used route in Barrow, so drivers should expect disruption once the closure begins.
Abbey Road is one of the main roads through the town. It is used by commuters, residents, buses, taxis and people travelling to local shops, schools, workplaces and services.
Because of this, the closure may lead to busier traffic on nearby routes, especially during morning and evening peak times.
When Will the Closure Start?
The closure order comes into operation on June 1st.
Although the order allows the closure to last for up to 18 months, the works are expected to take around 3 months.
This means drivers may be affected through the summer period, depending on how the works progress.
Motorists are being advised to follow traffic signs in the area, as exact access arrangements may change during different stages of the work.
Why Is the Road Closing?
The closure is being put in place so that highway improvements can be carried out.
Road closures are often needed for this type of work to keep workers, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians safe. They also give contractors enough space to complete the improvements properly.
The council has not provided further detail in the notice about the exact type of highway improvements being carried out. However, works of this kind can include repairs, resurfacing, drainage improvements, kerb work, junction changes, footway work or other road safety upgrades.
Diversion Route During the Works
During the closure, traffic will be redirected along unrestricted sections of:
- Abbey Road
- Hawcoat Lane
- Dalton Lane
Drivers should follow the official signs placed on local roads.
It is also worth allowing extra time for journeys, as the diversion may increase traffic on surrounding routes.
Advice for Local Drivers
Drivers should check their route before travelling from June 1.
Anyone travelling through the area should look out for temporary road signs and allow extra time, particularly at busy times of day.
